Project Restoration: Part 4

2020 has been and continues to be the year that tests our resolve in every sense of the word. No one could have predicted the events nor its global impact on each and every one of us.

Covid 19 has not only targeted our physical well-being but has knocked our mental health for a six with quarantine, lockdown, job losses, social distancing to just name a few.

So I feel that we need to come up with strategies that will help us to restore our mental balance and bring a calm to the storm that is raging within our minds due to these uncertain and crazy times.

Next on the list is one that EVERYONE needs to be more aware of.

Breath Focus

In this simple, powerful technique, you take long, slow, deep breaths. As you breathe, you gently disengage your mind from distracting thoughts and sensations.

❌ this technique may not be appropriate for those with health problems that make breathing difficult, such as respiratory ailments or heart failure.

✅ Strengthens your brain and boosts attention span

✅ Reduce stress levels in your body.

✅ Lower your heart rate.

✅ Lower your blood pressure

✅ Better regulate your body's reaction to stress and fatigue.

Build up your breath focus practice by starting with a 10-minute session and gradually increase duration until your sessions are at least 20 minutes.

There are 4 types of breathing:

Eupnea (Normal quiet):

Requires contraction of diaphragm & external intercostal muscles.

Diaphragmatic (Deep):

Requires contraction of the diaphragm

Costal (Shallow):

Requires contraction of the intercostal muscles

Hyperpnea (Forced):

Requires muscle contractions during both inspiration and expiration such as contraction of the diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and accessory muscles.

Breath Focus works to strengthen us to be more resilient against negative forces that attack our physical and mental wellbeing.

Bottomline… it does the body and mind good!
